Savage Beauty (Season 2)
*Minor spoilers regarding character leads and developments*
Yesss! Two years later, the second iteration of this South African drama has blown its predecessor out of the water. It was certainly worth the wait.
To be honest, I devoured the first season, but it wasn’t that great. I attempted to rewatch it about a year ago and lost interest. While it’s a unique and alluring story, the writing and principal acting were lacking.
Zinhle, played by Rosemary Zimu, has taken a back seat this season, and for this I am thankful. Zimu is not a very talented actress; I give her like a 6 out of 10. There are some scenes in which I’m like, “Okay I could’ve done better than that,” and I’m a terrible actress. I’m sure she’s a lovely person but she could stand to work on her acting chops. I’m also glad that Ndumiso, played by Oros Mampofu, is no longer a lead character, as I find him to be unattractive and annoying.
Season two is all about the Bhengus, and some viewers were upset, but I think the story is developing and moving forward in a way that makes sense for the series. This season headlines Grace, Don, Phila, Thando, and Linda. The love stories and triangles between and around these characters get even more bold, intricate and enthralling.
We also have two new formidable characters introduced this season, and their respective actors did the roles justice, especially Tony Kgoroge as Richard Moloto. Lebogang Fisher plays Charlie, an enigmatic woman who weaves her way into the family’s lives. Noni, played by Eve Rasimeni, also emerges as a key, complex character whose existence exposes different aspects of the Bhengus.
I think you’ll be surprised to see the new sides of Grace and Phila that are uncovered in season two, especially Grace; she actually shows some redeeming qualities at one point.
In any case, the writing, acting, cinematography, and character development all take it up a notch this season. It’s kind of like watching a whole new show.
The second season ended on a satisfactory note as certain storylines come to a conclusion while others are open-ended and require a follow-up. I’m excited for season three.
Seasons one and two are currently available to stream on Netflix.
